چکیده

Drosophila in flight show an unexpected cyclicity in gas exchange even at constant metabolic flux rates--perhaps because regular proboscis extensions assist in providing oxygen to the fly's brain.

Consequences of periodic augmented breaths on tongue muscle activities in hypoxic rats.

This study was designed to investigate the influence of hypoxia-evoked augmented breaths (ABs) on respiratory-related tongue protrudor and retractor muscle activities and inspiratory pump muscle output. Genioglossus (GG) and hyoglossus (HG) electromyogram (EMG) activities and respiratory-related tongue movements were compared with peak esophageal pressure (Pes; negative change in pressure durin...

Gut bacterial communities in the Mediterranean fruit fly (Ceratitis capitata) and their impact on host longevity.

Fruit flies (Diptera: Tephritidae) harbor stable bacterial communities in their digestive system, composed mainly of members of the Enterobacteriaceae. However, the Enterobacteriaceae are not the sole community in this habitat. We examined the hypothesis that Pseudomonas spp. form a cryptic community in the gut of Ceratitis capitata, the Mediterranean fruit fly ('medfly'). Suicide polymerase re...

Wing and body kinematics measurement and force analyses of landing in fruit flies.

In this paper, we analyzed the body and wing kinematics and mechanics in fruit flies' landings on a vertical pole. By high-speed video techniques and CFD method, we exhibited the detailed process of landing as follows. A fruit fly first decelerates and enters a near-hover state approximately 25 mm away from the vertical pole, then starts approaching the pole in acceleration till one of its fron...

Estimating Orientation of Flying Fruit Flies

The recently growing interest in studying flight behaviours of fruit flies, Drosophila melanogaster, has highlighted the need for developing tools that acquire quantitative motion data. Despite recent advance of video tracking systems, acquiring a flying fly's orientation remains a challenge for these tools. In this paper, we present a novel method for estimating individual flying fly's orienta...

More than apples and oranges - Detecting cancer with a fruit fly's antenna

Cancer cells and non-cancer cells differ in their metabolism and they emit distinct volatile compound profiles, allowing to recognise cancer cells by their scent. Insect odorant receptors are excellent chemosensors with high sensitivity and a broad receptive range unmatched by current gas sensors. We thus investigated the potential of utilising the fruit fly's olfactory system to detect cancer ...
